That Baby Name Game is operated by The Old Appleyard Ltd ("we", "us", or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect when you use our mobile application and website, how we use it, and your rights in relation to it.
We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data in an open and transparent manner, in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
1. Data we collect
When you use That Baby Name Game, we may collect and process the following information:
- Email address — used to sign you in to the app securely via a one-time code. We do not store passwords.
- Display name — a name you optionally provide for your profile, shown to other members of a shared naming journey.
- In-app activity — your swipe history (which names you liked or passed on), shortlisted names, round results, points, badges, and journey settings.
- Device and usage data — basic technical information such as your device type and operating system version, collected automatically to help us diagnose issues and improve the app.
- Contact form submissions — if you contact us via our website form, we collect your name, email address, and the content of your message.
We do not collect payment card details. Any future in-app purchases are processed entirely by Apple or Google and governed by their respective privacy policies.
2. How we use your data
We use the data we collect to:
- Create and maintain your account and authenticate you securely.
- Provide the core features of the app, including personalised name decks, shared journeys, shortlists, and gamification.
- Send you a sign-in code by email when you request one.
- Respond to your support requests and bug reports.
- Monitor and improve the performance and reliability of the service.
- Comply with our legal obligations.
We do not use your data for advertising purposes, and we do not sell or rent your personal data to third parties.
3. Legal basis for processing
We process your personal data on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — processing your account data and in-app activity is necessary to deliver the service you have asked us to provide.
- Legitimate interests — improving our service and diagnosing technical issues, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Legal obligation — retaining certain records to comply with applicable law.
4. Data storage and security
Your data is stored on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure located in the EU (Ireland) region (eu-west-1). We use industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews.
While we take every reasonable precaution, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. If you have any concerns about the security of your data, please contact us.
5. Data retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you request deletion of your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain certain records for longer.
Anonymised or aggregated data (which cannot identify you) may be retained indefinitely for analytical purposes.
6. Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate the app:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) — cloud infrastructure (servers, databases, email delivery). AWS is certified under multiple data protection standards and operates under a Data Processing Agreement with us.
- Apple App Store / Google Play Store — app distribution and any future in-app purchases. Their own privacy policies apply to data collected during these interactions.
We do not share your data with any other third parties unless required to do so by law.
7. Sharing journeys with others
If you create or join a shared naming journey, other participants in that journey will be able to see your display name and any names you have matched with the group. Swipes you make privately are never visible to other participants.
8. Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Erasure — request that we delete your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we process your data in certain circumstances.
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
To exercise any of these rights, please use our contact form and select "Data Deletion / Privacy Request" as the request type. We will respond within 30 days.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you believe we have not handled your data appropriately.
9. Children's privacy
Our app is intended for use by adults (18 and over) who are expecting or planning for a baby. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us immediately so we can remove it.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
